Leigh Parish Dorset

	Leigh is a parish and a village 6 miles south west from Sherborne. To the north is Lillington with Holnest and Hilfield to the east, Batcombe to the south, with Chetnole and Yetminster to the west. Leigh was formerly a chapelry of Yetminster but was made a separate parish in 1842 and the vicarage was not built until 1857. The church of St Andrew had a nave, north aisle, south porch and embattled tower with pinnacles. The registers date from 1842, the registers of Yetminster date from 1683. There is a Wesleyan chapel, a school built in 1861, a police station and a post office. The parish covers 2025 acres and is mainly laid to grass. The population in 1891 was 395. Totnell is a hamlet in the parish.
